The Way Things Are

Being poor killed my old man, Tootsie, it ain't gonna kill me

I understand, but–

No, listen to me

(sung)

You go along for a long, long time

Knowing something in your bones, but not too clear

Then one day, something happens to you

Boom, you really get to know it

Know it cold up here

Like today, today I suddenly knew

What I've known since before I was grown up

There are two kinds of people in the world, Tootsie

Only two

You're either a pitcher

Dishing it out, giving the orders, having your say

Or a catcher

Waiting around to handle what the other fella sends your way

From now on, I'm telling you

My catching days are through[TOOTSIE MALTZ, spoken]

I get it, Harry, I mean I think I do

You're a catcher or a pitcher

You're bamboozled or you get richer

You get done to or you do it

That's the way things are

That's the way things are and they've always been

If you're on the cold outside and you're wanting in

You gotta climb higher, always climb

I'm a pitcher, from now on, I'm pitching

I've caught on to the way things are

Where ya goin'?

To find five hundred bucks
