Wreck of the Old '97 - Live at The White House, Washington D.C., April 17, 1970
متن موزیک
(And it's a prettiest country in the world that we've got
I've been to bunch of 'em
And ain't nothing like it anywhere
With all these people we gotta entertain from everywhere
Put 'em all together and get 'em to singing our songs
And telling a story and talking about this thing had happened and that thing had happened
It's even more beautiful
It was about 1905 there was a fella sitting up on the side of the mountains up in Virginia
He's writing a letter to his boy that was overseas
And he saw a train coming down the track
And what happened that day he wrote down some words and
Later put it to the tune of the ship that never returned
Which was the popular song of the day
And right after that everybody was singing the song about the ol' '97)
Well they gave him his orders at Monroe Virginia said, "Steve, you're way behind time
This is not '38 this is ol' '97 put her into Spencer on time"
Then he turned around and said to his black greasy fireman shovel on a little more coal
And when we cross that White Oak Mountain watch ol' '97 roll
(Well lieutenant speaking to you)
Then a telegram come to Washington station this is how it read
It said that brave engineer that done run ol' '97 he's lyin' down in old Danville dead
'Cause he was going down a grade making 90 miles an hour
His whistle broken to a scream
He was found in the wreck with his hand on the throttle
Ah, scalded to death by the steam
Poor boy
Haha (poor boy)
